River Cruises have become what seems to be the fastest growing travel trend, and have been for several years. European river cruises are the most popular since they feature sailings down the world’s most legendary waterways like the Danube, Rhine, Moselle and Seine. The best thing about river cruising is the ability to float down these waterways to see the same iconic destinations as a land tour and cruising at just the right pace for both sightseeing and relaxation. It is wonderful to be able to see so many places without unpacking every other day and moving to a new hotel.
These floating hotels have many of the amenities you’d expect at a regular hotel. The cabins have a private bath, television, writing desk, French balcony, telephone, closet, safe, and a place to sit. You can also expect to find a pool, walking track, a sun deck, fitness room, hairdresser, massage, restaurant, bar and so much more. There is always something to enjoy on a river cruise. Many choose river cruising over ocean cruising because of the slower pace and not having to worry about sea sickness in case of rougher than normal wave action. The entire atmosphere is more calming and laid back. The dress is very “country club casual” and there are no formal nights which allows for easier packing. River cruisers are much smaller vessels, which means fewer passengers. They usually carry less than 200 people. This not only provides a quieter environment but also gives you a chance to get to know your fellow cruisers. Smaller vessels mean fewer passengers. River cruisers usually only carry less than 200 people. This gives you a chance to get to know your fellow cruisers as well as avoid dealing with noisy crowds. As the ship docks along the way, local entertainers come on board to entertain guests with music and dance performances. At each stop the chef on board has a chance to go shopping for fresh, local produce, seafood and meat to prepare for you. Local beer and wine are also available at the ship’s bar. The staff on board river cruises are very accommodating and ready to help you feel at home in any way they can. Whether you need an extra blanket or a cappuccino made just the way you like it, the staff are eager to please. Your tour directors are there to guide you on city tours and help you check off your bucket list of attractions, but you’ll also have time to go out on your own to go wherever your heart leads you. Your ship docks right in town so hopping on and off for an excursion is easy and convenient. It is so fun to visit a new place of interest each day. You can just sit back and relax as you sail from one city or country to the next. They say an older crowd tends to like river cruising….and if you think about it… with age comes wisdom! There are several major contenders in the race to be the best European river cruise company. Viking, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Avalon, Uniworld, etc. Viking tends to get the most business because of their bogo specials and free flights offers. If you are not into the longhaul flights to Europe, American Cruiselines, (also owners of Pearl Cruises), also provides some classy river cruising in the USA and Canada. Because of the rising popularity of river cruising it is becoming increasing important to book them early while the two for one sales are in place because they get booked very quickly. It is better to book with a travel agency that may have access to special booking codes to save you money as well as give you advice on the newer ships and itineraries. What are you waiting for?
